Authorized Teen DPS ROAD Testing

TEENS (AGE 16-24) (COMPLETED A TEEN DRIVER ED. COURSE)

Green Light Driving Academy is authorized by the Texas Department of Public Safety to administer the official DPS  Road Test (Skills Test). Teens that completed a teen drivers education course at a different commercial driving school or a parent taught program are encouraged to test at any of our testing sites across the DFW area.  Completing the authorized DPS Road Test (Skills Test) with GLDA, allows the flexibility of testing after normal business hours & on weekends. (Schedule subject to availability)

Payment must be made at time of scheduling.  No refund will be issued once the test has been scheduled & payment is received.


IS MY TEEN ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE AUTHORIZED DPS  ROAD TEST?


Teen requirements for taking the authorized DPS Road Test:

  1. be at least 16 years old.
  2. held a learner's license (learner's permit) for 180 days. (on the back of the permit & is NOT the expiration date of the permit)
  3. completed a Teen Drivers Ed course (32 hrs of classroom instruction, 14 hrs of in-car training & the 30 hr of documented driving with parents. (SAMPLE OF DE-964 or PTDE-964 certificate - REQUIRED)
  4. completed the  MANDATORY 2 HR “Impact Texas Teen Drivers” (ITTD) class. (ORIGINAL COMPLETED certificate REQUIRED).  NOTE:  THIS IS NOT A PART OF THE TEEN DRIVER EDUCATION COURSE & the  ITTD video course certificate must be dated AFTER completion of the drivers ed course date.


Once the requirements have been met, teens can take the authorized DPS Road Test at GLDA.  Upon successful completion of the DPS Road Test, GLDA staff will provide the required documentation to take to a Texas Dept. of Public Safety Office to obtain a Texas Class C driver license.  


NOTE:  Teens  may not legally drive cannot drive alone until their driver license is issued. GLDA cannot issue the Texas Class C driver license.

  1. Skip the DPS - GLDA allow GLDA to submit the DPS docs. - $25 fee applies. 
  2. GLDA is closed on Sunday.
  3. Special scheduling may be available for an additional fee. Inquire when scheduling.

DOCUMENT & VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS


(Checklist for Documents & Vehicle Requirements - printable)


These documents are REQUIRED by the Texas D.P.S. for testing purposes. It is  your responsibility to ensure that the documents listed below are provided by the student & parent  when arriving for the test.  If ANY of these documents are missing, the student CANNOT be allowed to take the test & must reschedule. A $50 rescheduling fee may apply.


  1. Valid and NOT Expired learner license (learner's permit)
  2. ORIGINAL Course Completion Certificate (Form DE-964 or PTDE-964) (will state Texas Driver Education Certificate - "For Drivers License Only").  This form must be filled in and signed as required by the form.
  3. Documented 30-hour driving log.  These are the practice hours driven with the parent or other qualified adult.
  4. ORIGINAL completion certificate for the “Impact Texas Teen Drivers” (ITTD) video class taken.  The certificate is available for printing after completing the video course on-line and cannot be printed at the Green Light Driving Academy office. Please Note:  The ITTD video course cannot be taken BEFORE the student has completed their teen driving program.  PLEASE SEE MORE INFORMATION & LINK TO VIDEO BELOW.
  5. Application for Driver License - DL-14a (age 18 & above) or DL-14b (age 17 & below)
  6. Proof of valid, unexpired automobile liability insurance for the car used for the test.  A printed copy of the car's Texas Liability Insurance card MUST be presented with the documents at time of check in.  GLDA cannot accept an electronic copy of the insurance card (i.e. on a phone or any other electronic device)  & cannot print this at the GLDA testing location.


Car used for the test must have a current, unexpired registration sticker on the windshield & properly attached FRONT & REAR license plates. The VIN numbers on the registration sticker, auto insurance  & the car must match. Texas law (TXTRC 504.943 (A) , requires a car registered in Texas MUST have a metal front & rear license plate attached to the bumper. UNLESS there is a valid Texas Buyer's paper plate for a recently purchased vehicle.  


PLEASE NOTE:  

  1. After March 1, 2015, the inspection requirement became part of the registration process & a separate inspection sticker is not longer required.  
  2. An  unexpired, Verification of Enrollment (VOE) form is required by Texas DPS for issuance of a Class C driver license. This is NOT a requirement to take the test at GLDA. In the summer, this form must be obtained before the end of the school year & is valid until the next school year begins.
  3.  A parent or legal guardian must accompany the teen for the test (NO EXCEPTIONS).

IMPACT TEXAS TEEN DRIVER VIDEO (ITTD)

Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) was developed by the Department of Public Safety with the goal of saving lives through awareness and education. ITTD is a 2 hour informational video that is a prerequisite to the drive skills examination being administered by the Texas DPS or Green Light Driving Academy.  


  1. The ITTD course must be completed after receiving the DE-964, showing completion of a Teen Driver Education course
  2. Upon completion of the ITTD course the student will receive a Certificate of Completion that must be presented prior to administering the drive skills examination.
  3. The ITTD video course cannot be taken BEFORE the requirements for the teen driver education program have been completed & the certificate of completion must be dated within 90 days of the administered skills examination (road test).

NOTE: Upon registration for the ITTD class online, designation of the course type that was completed by the student will be requested, either a parent-taught program, a commercial school program, or Texas high school program.

If the student took the course from GLDA:

  1. select  "Commercial School" 
  2. enter "Green Light Driving Academy" 
  3. choose the appropriate school code (see below) for the location  

  • C1728 - Grapevine, Boyd (Boyd High School), EMS-ISD (all schools)
  • C1728A - Coppell
  • C1728B - Trophy Club or Roanoke

COST: 

  • $75  Authorized DPS Road Test (Skills Test) 
  • $25 (document submission via DPS Portal)
  • $50 (if doc. submission is purchased after initial scheduling) 


GLDA will charge an additional $50 fee for:

  1. Retesting after unsuccessful attempt
  2. Failure to provide the required documents on day of test (DOCUMENT CHECKLIST)
  3. Retesting due to vehicle inspection failure (including but limited to improper registration & license plate issues)
  4. Rescheduling due to failure to arrive at designated time (at least 20 minutes prior to scheduled time)
  5. Cancelling or rescheduling test less than 48 hrs prior to scheduled test 
  6. Failure to attend for scheduled appointment time

RESTRICTIONS- TX CLASS C PROVISIONAL TEEN DRIVER LICENSE

 The following restrictions will apply to a teen's Texas Class C Provisional Driver License until age 18:


  • PASSENGERS LIMITATIONS : No more than ONE passenger under 21 years of age who is not a family member;
  • DRIVING CURFEW: No vehicle operation between midnight & 5am unless for employment, school-related activities or medical emergency
  • USE OF MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICES: No wireless communication device usage while driving (cell phone). This also includes Blue Tooth  or any hands free method.
