Frequently asked questions about drivers ED. at GLDA

  • Where is GLDA located? 

 

GLDA's corporate office in Roanoke that supports several “drive only” locations in Grapevine, Coppell, & Saginaw (EMS-ISD).

Drive lessons will begin & end at:

  • Grapevine - Grapevine HS -  MAC PARKING LOT - ACROSS FROM TENNIS COURTS - FAR BACK CORNER - (adjacent  to the AG Facility), entrance off Timberline Dr (pick-up & drop off point only- lessons conducted on public streets in Grapevine, Colleyville and/or Southlake area.) 
  • Coppell - Createria Studios -  509 W Bethel Rd, Coppell, TX 75019 (GLDA's former Coppell office)
  • Saginaw (EMS-ISD) - Hafely Dev. Center 616 W McLeroy Blvd, Saginaw, TX 76179  


Did the Grapevine & Coppell offices close?

  • The physical offices in Grapevine & Coppell moved to Roanoke.
  • The services provided to the Grapevine & Coppell communities & the surrounding area HAS NOT CHANGED. GLDA still provides DPS Road Testing & Drive Lessons in those areas. 


To receive a drivers license, who is required to complete a driver education course? 

  • Any person who is age 14 to under 25 must complete a driver education course.


I want to take a driver education course, what are the course options?


You may use the following options:

  • Enrolling in a class (traditional zoom - instructor led- Mon-Thur - 2 hrs per day for 4 weeks or online class- self paced ) at GLDA
  • Parent Taught Driver Education program with GLDA
  • Complete driver education via a combination of GLDA's parent taught program & instructors at GLDA


What is a Zoom Class?

  •  This class is taught using the free ZOOM meeting app & is taught by one of the GLDA instructors live and interactive with students. Class meets at a scheduled time- Mon-Thur for 4 weeks.    


How much do the driver education courses cost?

  • Option prices varies -  GLDA Program Options 
  • Full tuition & fee list & discount options


What methods of payment does GLDA accept? 

  1. Cash
  2. Personal Check 
  3. Credit Card or Debit Card

  •  3% convenience fee applied to ALL credit & debit card transactions
  • Convenience fees are not refundable. NO EXCEPTIONS. 
  • Master Card, Visa & Discover cards only (NO AMERICAN EXPRESS)


How long is the teen driver education course? 

TX Dept of Licensing & Regulation  Requirements

  • Classroom phase - 32 hrs - cannot be completed in less than 16 days
  • In-car phase - 7 hrs - behind-the-wheel driving, 7 hrs - observation
  • An additional 30 hrs - behind-the-wheel driving - 10 hrs must be at night *** additional 30 hrs monitored by the parent or guardian - must be completed in the presence of an adult who holds a valid license, is 21 or older, has at least one year of driving experience ***


What are the timelines to complete a teen driver education course?

  • GLDA's contract period is ONE (1) YEAR. Students must complete all instruction provided by GLDA instructors by the contract deadline. (ONE YEAR from the first day of classroom instruction for traditional zoom or receipt of the classroom code for the online course)


When can my teen obtain a learner license (learner permit)?

  • A student must be 15 years of age & complete the first 6 hrs of drivers ed class


When can my teen obtain a Provisional License? 

  • Once the student has held the learner license for at least 6 months, is 16 years old or older, and has completed all driver education hours (32 classroom and 44 driving hours), the student may then take the driving exam at Green Light Driving Academy. Upon successful completion of the driving exam, the student will then be issued a driver license by DPS officials at a Texas DPS office.  


At what age can a person begin a driver education course at GLDA? 

  • Teens can begin driver education (classroom portion) at age 14. 

             (GLDA suggests students are at least 14 1/2 years old.) 


If my teen misses a class or classes of driver education , can they make up those hours?

  • Yes, you may miss up to 10 hours of classroom sessions. You will need to coordinate with the GLDA office for make-up class options.

OPTION 1

Traditional ZOOM classroom & In-Car instruction – 

*required by the State of Texas for a teen to obtain driver’s license.*


  1. *32 hours classroom instruction* provided via live ZOOM class by GLDA instructor
  2. *14 hours in-car instruction* 7 hours Behind-the-Wheel (B-T-W) instruction & 7 hours observation - Drive lesson scheduling with GLDA instructors begins after a copy of the learners permit has been summited to GLDA office staff. A progress report and/or letter is provided following each driving lessons detailing progress & outlining suggestions for parents B-T-W practice at home. Course Completion Certificate (Form DE-964 – FOR DRIVER LICENSE ONLY) issued once student completes full course.
  3. *30 hours practice at home* documented with  or another adult
  4. Parent Orientation  (PDF) emailed following beginning of a new classroom session. Information includes: permit requirements, make-up classes, driving instructions & scheduling, license requirements & testing, and insurance. 
  5. Administration of Permit Tests - 3rd day of class - DE-964 (FOR LEARNER LICENSE) issued 2nd week of class, Permit documentation packet provided with detailed instructions on obtaining the learners permit.
  6. 6 hour- Drug & Alcohol Awareness Course- (included in 32 hour classroom instruction) ($25 value) student receives a possible ADDITIONAL 5% discount on auto insurance - Exclusive to GLDA Students - (Ask auto-insurance agent for availability)
  7. Classroom make-up sessions included. (Texas law requires any classroom session missed MUST be made-up)
  8. Additional Service - DPS Road Test review & preparation. GLDA is authorized to administer the DPS Road Test & offers a discount to GLDA students for this service. 


  • Tuition:  $485.00 - Grapevine, Roanoke, Coppell & Boyd  
  • $435.00 - Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD locations ** $50.00 fee for students that attend EMS-ISD locations that are not EMS-ISD students

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Only - Students complete the classroom portion at home with parents and  driving completed with GLDA instructors. 

  1.  14 hours in-car instruction (7 hours B-T-W instruction & 7 hours observation)- parents/students receive a progress report and/or letter details progress & outlining suggestions for parents for at home B-T-W practice after each B-T-W lesson.
  2. Additional Service - DPS Road Test review & preparation. GLDA is authorized to administer the DPS Road Test & offers a discount to GLDA students for this service.

Green Light Driving Academy is a 3rd party Testing Location. Upon completion of the driver education course, students may complete the DPS Road test with a GLDA examiner. 


The benefit is that GLDA tests after school and in the evenings and on the weekends. Typical DPS office are only open M-F 8am-5pm.

Adult Driver information

Important info Regarding Adult instruction

  Adult students must have a valid learner's permit for the state of Texas.

  • Persons age 18-24 years old must take a 6-hour adult driver education course to obtain a learner's permit.


 6-HOUR TEXAS LEARNERS PERMIT COURSE


The class (through "IamRoadReady") is a 6-hour online course that includes the TX Dept. of Public Safety permit test.  A certificate is provided upon successful completion of the course. This certificate, along with other documentation, is used to obtain the learner's permit from the Texas Department of Public Safety. 


NOTE:  This course is available for anyone over 18 years of age but IS a requirement for all persons age 18-24  to obtain the learners permit & to take the DPS Road Test.


The cost of the 6-hour online course  (through IamRoadReady) is $39.00 (price subject to change & paid online).

GLDA offers the DPS Road Test for Adults = $120.00 We will contact you within 72 hours of your submission.

The following lesson & road test packages can prepare you for the DPS Road Test which is administered at Green Light Driving Academy.

INSTRUCTION & DPS ROAD TEST PACKAGES FOR ADULTS- AGE 18 & OLDER

The following packages include:  Regular and/or Review Lessons, a Test Preparation Lesson AND the DPS Road Test

  • Student must have a valid non-expired Texas learner's permit
  • All driving instruction (lessons) & DPS Road Test completed in a GLDA vehicle.
  • FOR PRE-TEST PREPARATION LESSON AND DPS ROAD TEST:  The student will need to be brought to the GLDA location where the DPS Road Test will be given.
  • If you wish to be picked up for any of the lessons (except the pre-test preparation lesson) - there will be $50.00 added PER lesson to be picked up.
  • DPS Road Test ONLY = $120.00
  • Pre-Test Preparation lesson + DPS Road Test = $220.00
  • 3 hours (2 hour regular/review lessons & Pre-Test Preparation lesson) + DPS Road Test = $370.00
  • 7 hours (6 regular/review lessons & Pre-Test Preparation lesson) + DPS Road Test = $620.00
  • any additional regular/review lessons outside of these packages = $85 per hour for each additional hour

These packages are for instruction only.  NO DPS ROAD TEST INCLUDED.

  • Student must have a valid non-expired Texas learner's permit
  • All driving instruction (lessons) will be done in a GLDA vehicle.

  • DPS Road Test can be purchased after lessons are complete for the regular price of $120.00.
  • 2 - 3 hours of instruction = $95.00 per hour
  • 4 - 6 hours of instruction = $90.00 per hour
  • 7 + hours of instruction = $85.00 per hour
